Cricket Kenya Launches CK T20 League to Honour Past Glory and Usher in New Era

In a bold move to revive the nation's cricketing legacy and propel the sport into a new era, Cricket Kenya (CK) on Wednesday officially launched the CK T20 League, a franchise-based tournament set to begin this November in Nairobi.

The league will pay tribute to Kenya’s golden generation of cricketers — the national teams of 1996 to 2003, who famously elevated the country to global prominence, including a historic semi-final appearance in the 2003 ICC World Cup. The new T20 competition aims to not only honour those achievements but also develop the next wave of cricketing talent in Kenya and across the African continent.

The initiative comes after the signing of a lucrative partnership between Cricket Kenya and AOS Sport Tournament, a Dubai/India-based sports promotion company. The collaboration is expected to inject professionalism, visibility, and international exposure into Kenyan cricket.

The CK T20 League will feature six franchises:

Nairobi Challengers

Simba Royals

Mombasa Wildebeests

Kisumu Tuskers

Rhino Hitters

Masai Mara Warriors

Each team will consist primarily of local talent, with selected foreign players joining under ICC oversight. The inclusion of players from other African Associate Member nations is also expected, in a bid to enhance regional cricketing ties.
A Tournament for Legacy and the Future

Speaking during the official launch in Nairobi, Cricket Kenya Counties Representative Kennedy Obuya, himself a member of the celebrated 2003 team, described the tournament as a foundational step toward restoring Kenya’s place in the cricketing world.

“If we are to use football as an example, CHAN has helped revive the hopes of the Kenyan football family. With the CK T20 League, we want to set the tone for the revival of cricket in Kenya,” said Obuya.
“As a board, we are determined to work together to ensure that we make this tournament a success.”

Chandra Prakash Panwar, Chairman of AOS, acknowledged the challenges faced in launching the league but expressed confidence in its long-term impact.

“It has been a challenge to make this event happen. The focus is to ensure that players, coaches, and fans have a thrilling cricket experience.”
Also present at the launch was Nairobi County Executive Committee Member for Sports Brian Mulama, who praised the league's dual purpose.

“This tournament celebrates two different generations — the players who brought Kenya glory between 1996 and 2003, and the youth who will now get a chance to achieve their dreams and restore Kenya’s place on the global cricket map.”

Legends Honoured, Named Tournament Ambassadors

In a gesture of gratitude, Kenya’s cricketing legends were honoured at the event, each receiving Ksh 100,000 for their service to the sport. The cricket icons who received recognition included:

Maurice Odumbe

Martin Suji

Peter Ong’ondo

Morris Ouma

Tony Suji

Elijah Otieno

Rajab Ali

David Obuya

Kennedy Obuya

Collins Obuya

These legends will now serve as Tournament Ambassadors, offering mentorship and visibility to the tournament, while helping to bridge the gap between Kenya’s cricketing past and its bright future.
