Nairobi, Kenya – August 15, 2025
In a powerful display of resilience and remembrance, AMREF Flying Doctors has resumed its lifesaving missions with the “Wings of Courage” maiden flight, the organization’s first operation since the tragic aircraft accident in Mwihoko, Kiambu County on August 7, 2025.
The emotional flight carried a critically injured patient from Zanzibar to Belgium, a mission steeped not only in urgency but in tribute—honouring the memory of Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani Miaro, Dr. Charles Mugo Njoroge, Nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula, and two members of the Mwihoko community who lost their lives in the crash.
“This flight is more than a mission—it is a message. A message that courage endures, that service continues, and that the legacy of our fallen heroes lives on in every life we save. We fly not just with wings, but with purpose,” said Steve Gitau, CEO of AMREF Flying Doctors.
Commitment to Families and Community
In the aftermath of the tragedy, AMREF Flying Doctors has taken comprehensive steps to support all those affected:
Family Engagement and Support: Ongoing grief counselling, dedicated liaison officers, and transparent communication have been provided to the bereaved families. Emotional, logistical, and practical support remains a top priority.
Victim Identification: In collaboration with government agencies and forensic experts, the organization has ensured accurate and respectful identification of all victims.
Community Support: The Mwihoko community, where the crash occurred, continues to receive psychosocial support, relief efforts, and a sustained presence to help residents process trauma and loss.
Ongoing Investigation
AMREF Flying Doctors is working closely with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and other investigative bodies to ensure a full, transparent review of the accident. The organization has pledged to uphold the highest aviation safety standards and apply all lessons learned to strengthen future operations.
A Legacy that Lives On
While the pain of loss is still fresh, the return to the skies signals a critical step forward for the aeromedical organization. AMREF Flying Doctors remains steadfast in its mission to provide exceptional emergency medical services across Africa and beyond.
In the words of one family member of the fallen crew: “They gave their lives saving others. It brings us comfort to know their work continues.”
The “Wings of Courage” flight embodies the spirit of AMREF Flying Doctors: undaunted by tragedy, driven by compassion, and bound by a mission that transcends loss.
