The Nairobi Hospital has achieved a significant milestone after receiving two internationally recognized certifications, reaffirming its leadership in quality healthcare delivery, environmental stewardship, and occupational health and safety management.
The hospital was recertified for the sixth cycle of ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) and earned its inaugural ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) certification. The certifications were officially issued by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) following a rigorous audit process conducted in September and October 2025.
Speaking during the award ceremony, Esther Ngari, Managing Director of KEBS, lauded the hospital for embedding sustainability and safety into its operational culture.
“By sustaining ISO 14001 through six certification cycles, you demonstrate that environmental stewardship is not episodic — it is embedded,” she stated. “By attaining ISO 45001, you affirm that the wellbeing of your staff is safeguarded deliberately and proactively. Environmental sustainability and safety benchmarks are crucial aspects in today’s dynamic healthcare environment.”
Ngari further announced that KEBS will establish a dedicated “green channel” for The Nairobi Hospital to facilitate faster turnaround times and priority service delivery for calibration and technical support needs — a move aimed at strengthening the partnership and supporting continuous improvement.
Receiving the certificates on behalf of the hospital, Felix Osano, Chief Executive Officer of The Nairobi Hospital, emphasized that quality remains a continuous journey rather than a destination.
“Achieving certification in environmental and occupational health and safety management keeps us increasingly aware of the part we have to play in creating a safe environment for current and future generations,” Osano said. “It is our commitment to continue elevating our standards to be better positioned to execute our mandate in society.”
He reaffirmed the hospital’s dedication to continuous system improvement, integration of management systems for data-driven decision-making, and operational excellence.
Comprehensive Quality Framework
The dual certification underscores the hospital’s sustained implementation of internationally recognized standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Beyond ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, The Nairobi Hospital also maintains
In addition, the institution continues to pursue global healthcare quality benchmarks through Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation.
The certifications followed a comprehensive process involving leadership commitment, staff training, systems gap analysis, development of policies and standard operating procedures, internal audits, management reviews, and two-stage external audits conducted by KEBS.
Strengthening Safety, Sustainability, and Patient Care
Hospital officials noted that the recertification of ISO 14001:2015 EMS and the successful certification of ISO 45001:2018 OHSMS are a testament to the institution’s adoption of sustainable healthcare delivery models, proactive risk-based occupational safety frameworks, and strengthened institutional governance.
The certifications reinforce The Nairobi Hospital’s position as a leading healthcare institution committed to enhancing patient safety and quality of care, promoting environmental sustainability, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring safe, high-quality nutrition through robust food safety systems.
As the hospital celebrates this milestone, its leadership reiterated that excellence in healthcare is built on sustained effort, accountability, and continuous improvement.
With six successful cycles of environmental certification now under its belt and an expanding portfolio of internationally recognized standards, The Nairobi Hospital signals its determination to remain at the forefront of safe, sustainable, and patient-centered healthcare delivery in Kenya and beyond.
