Japan Embassy Boosts Kenya Paralympic Team with Gym Equipment Ahead of Commonwealth Games
Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC) has received a major boost in its preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the Embassy of Japan in Kenya donated gym and sports equipment worth USD 17,500 under Japan's Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects programme.
The support, one of Japan's flagship grassroots cooperation initiatives, is aimed at directly improving the lives of individuals and communities through investments in sports, culture and social development.
The equipment will benefit Kenya's para-athletes who are currently intensifying training ahead of the 23rd Commonwealth Games, scheduled for August 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. It will be installed at the Kenya National Paralympic Committee's sports facility at the Nyayo National Stadium, providing athletes with improved access to modern training equipment.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Charge d'Affaires at the Embassy of Japan underscored the transformative role of sport in society.
"Sport is a powerful force for social inclusion. It transcends physical, social and cultural barriers, empowering individuals to realise their full potential regardless of their abilities. Through this support, we hope more Kenyans will be inspired to take up sport and, in doing so, discover their talents, strength, confidence and sense of belonging," he said.
Receiving the donation on behalf of KNPC President Ronald Milare, Secretary General Stanley Mutuma described the timely support as a significant milestone for para-sport development in Kenya.
"The equipment received today will enable us to accommodate more para-athletes during each training session, something that has been difficult due to limited facilities. The gym will also be available free of charge to members of the National Paralympic Committee, ensuring our athletes have consistent access to quality training," Mutuma said.
He noted that the donation comes at a critical time as the national team steps up preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Beyond the upcoming competition, he said, the equipment will serve as a lasting investment in the development of para-sport across the country by strengthening training programmes and nurturing future talent.
The donation reinforces the longstanding partnership between Kenya and Japan in promoting inclusive development and demonstrates a shared commitment to empowering persons with disabilities through sport.
