The Government has officially flagged off Team Kenya for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with a strong message urging the athletes to uphold the country's legacy of sporting excellence and compete with courage, discipline and humility.
Speaking during the Team Kenya naming and flag-off ceremony at Stadion Hotel in Kasarani, Nairobi, Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, CBS, described the occasion as a proud moment for the nation as 188 athletes and officials prepare to represent Kenya on one of the world's biggest sporting stages.
"It gives me immense pride and great honour to stand before you today as we officially flag off Team Kenya to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland," said Mwangi.
He noted that the delegation was not just travelling for competition but carrying the hopes, identity and aspirations of millions of Kenyans.
"We are not merely sending a delegation to an international competition. We are entrusting 188 exceptional Kenyans with the honour of carrying our flag, our identity and our aspirations onto one of the world's greatest sporting stages," he said.
The PS congratulated all athletes who earned selection to Team Kenya, saying the opportunity had been achieved through years of sacrifice, discipline, resilience and dedication rather than chance.
He commended the coaches, technical teams, sports scientists, medical personnel and administrators for ensuring the athletes were physically, mentally and tactically prepared for the Games.
