Kenya, U.S. Deepen Strategic Partnership on Trade, Health and Security
NAIROBI, Kenya 9th Sept 2026
Kenya and the United States are seeking to deepen their strategic partnership by turning strong diplomatic ties into tangible benefits for citizens, including jobs, investment, affordable healthcare and greater security.
The focus emerged during discussions between Kenyan officials and Frank Garcia, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, during his official visit to Kenya.
The talks centred on expanding trade and investment between the two countries, with Kenya highlighting the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through 2028 and ongoing reciprocal trade negotiations as opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation and create more opportunities for businesses.
Health cooperation was also a key priority, with the two sides exploring ways to improve access to affordable treatment, including efforts aimed at reducing the cost of cancer care for Kenyans.
The discussions further covered cooperation in critical minerals, defence, peace and regional security, reflecting Kenya and the U.S.'s shared interest in strengthening stability and economic resilience across the region.
The two countries are also preparing for Kenya to host the Fourth Kenya–U.S. Bilateral Strategic Dialogue in December 2026. The meeting is expected to provide another platform for advancing cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
Kenyan officials said the priority is to ensure that the country's longstanding relationship with the United States produces measurable benefits for ordinary citizens.
The agenda, they noted, is ultimately about translating diplomacy into greater economic opportunities, stronger businesses, healthier communities and a more secure future for Kenyans.
